About Deacon Lawrence
In some ways Deacon Lawrence sees his life as a pilgrimage, a journey home. His grandparents journeyed to America as children, sent by their parents from their native Poland to the promise of a better life. Lawrence has spent his life studying the people and history and culture of the land of his grandmother and grandfather, in a sense, it has been a pilgrimage homeward.
He approached his faith in much the same way. For a thousand years Christianity in Poland has weathered heresies, reforms, discrimination and suppression, but like the people themselves it has survived and thrived. One cannot separate Poland from its Christian faith. To be a Christian is to be a pilgrim, journeying to our heavenly home.
His studies in Christianity include theology, mysticism, history, tradition, and even iconography at the feet of a Russian master. After receiving a "vision" or a dream, Lawrence felt the first faint stirrings of a call to Holy Orders. He was ordained a deacon of the Church in 2008.
It is against this backdrop that the artist within him found its vocation, a call to beauty. His artistic abilities have been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. Exploring the culture and faith that is the legacy of his ancestry has given his work a sharpened focus and a renewed purpose. He sees the gifts that God has given every person as the means to carry us home, a journey back to God.
His art reflects a deep desire to connect the viewer to the spiritual world, the invisible world that exists all around us, every bit as real and vital as the physical. Through the use of imagery and symbolism he attempts to create a bridge to that which is hidden, to help the viewer see the unseen.
Each work of art is the result of hours of study, research, meditation and prayer. Images are layered with meaning and ancient symbols are resurrected and re-presented to the modern age. It is an art that invites us to meditate on the eternal and find our own place in the great pilgrimage that is our journey home.
"Art has always served as a way to connect us with our spiritual side. For thousands of years artists have explored the unseen and mystical through a careful use of symbolism. By seeing these traditional symbols in new ways we can explore life's mysteries, find our passion, our mission and the true meaning of our lives." -- Lawrence Klimecki
